John is a 1949 Morristown graduate. John played basketball and track from 1946-1949 and also played on the boys’ softball team in 1946. He was the 1949 Rouse-Wortman Award winner and still holds the 100m record in track – 10.9 seconds. John’s long jump record, set in the 1948 Shelby County Track Meet was broken in 1998 by fellow inductee, Randy Davis. John scored an impressive 970 points in his high school career. John was one of three brothers (Marvin and Wayne) who played at MHS. All three were part of an era of Morristown basketball that went 124-54. In John's four years of basketball, the team went 68-23. John was also the pitcher on the boys’ softball team that won 1946 Shelby County Tournament. John would go on to play basketball at Indiana University for one year for the Branch McCracken led Hoosiers, before being interrupted by serving in the Korean War for one year. "John was one of the best athletes ever produced at Morristown." Don Wortman, author of A Hoosier Boy's Journey
